Street name changes - For some reason, the street designers of Salta decided to make things complicated. (note) Many of the street names change for no apparent reason. Thus on one side of a street called Caseros in the middle of the town the streets have one name, on the other side, the same streets have a different name. For example:
Florida | Balcarce
Alberdi | Mitre
Buenos Aires | Zuviria
Córdoba | Dean Funes
Note - I was recently told this has to do with the sewar system and with dividing the city into North and South.
Internet - Salta has lots of Internet cafes. They typical price as of March 2006 is 1 peso per hour. You can also sometimes get deals for 2 hours for 1.50. There are also some 24 hour Internet cafes in the center of town. One is about a half block up from the tourist info center

It is pretty hard to figure out where the city busses go, but they go about everywhere! Here
On the web there are maps of the bus routes. When you get to the page to go Mapas Recorridos
There is also is a link which has the entire bus route map. It is a very big file so it takes a long time to load then you have click on the lower right hand thing to make it all show up in large format. Then you can move it all around to see all the routes. You can get to it from the button on the home page that says Red Total Salta (Red means network in Spanish! Rojo is the color red!)

Calling collect to the USA
0 800 222 1288 ATT
0 800 222 1003 Sprint
0 800 222 6249 Worldcom?
You can make these calls from most "Telecentros" or "telecabinas". These are little shops which have phones in them. The 0 800 numbers are free so this is the most convienent way to call collect.
If you call a cell phone number, which typically look something like this 154 044 444, the person who receives the call also has to pay if you call from a telecentro. If they have no credit they won't be able to answer. Argentina is one of the only countries I know where both the caller and the receiver have to pay!
Calls overseas are very expensive in my opinon so I suggest you get a Skype account and find a Internet (ciber) which has headphones and then download the program if they don't already have it.
Infomachine number 154 422 903
It only has 7 hostels on it and the English is terrible.
Calculate the distance between Salta and other cities in the world. Use this link to get started. SASA is the "ICAQ" code for Salta. To calculate the distance from New York to Salta, just put SASA in the "location 2" box.
