Restaurants

Restaurants in Salta generally offer the same pastas, empanadas and steak that you can get everywhere in Argentina. But there are a few places that stand out. Here are some of our favorites.

Doña Lola Restaurant

El Galpon

Very good food for the best prices I've found in town. Meals are around 5 or 6 peos. On Urquiza, between LaValle and Santa Fe, about six blocks from the main plaza, next to the La Salama hostal.

Gervasi

I can’t find the exact address but it’s at the popular end of Balcarce, amongst all the bars and restaurants.

The food here is just that little bit more imaginative than the usual Salteño fare. The menu features traditional Indigenous food and llama steaks, together with all the usual beef and chicken dishes. Unfortunately the llama isn’t in season all year round, but you can still try the chef’s famous Rabbit in Malbec. The service here is excellent and the ambience is laid back and friendly.

Price of a main course: around $18

La Nueva China
Belgrano 1402

This small Chinese restaurant offers a very welcome change from all the empanadas and pizza. The food here is great, there’s a decent range of dishes, and it’s also very reasonably priced.

Price of a main course: around $15

Napoleon Pizza
Corner of Zuviría and Güemes

It may not look much from the outside, but when it comes to pizza, Napoleon delivers – literally as well as figuratively. The décor is cheap and cheerful, but the staff are welcoming and the service is first-rate. The pizzas themselves are some of the best I’ve tasted in Salta, and there’s a good variety of toppings on the menu.

Price of a large pizza: around $12
