Balcarce Craft Fair - Feria Artesanal

Every Sunday, till about 10 pm, there is an Arts and Crafts fair on Balcarce Street, in the same part of the street which is known for its nightlife. I was told that only original artists and craftsmen are allowed by the city to be in these weekly fairs. The craft fair starts when you cross the street Entre Rios (Between Rivers). It is about 7 blocks from the center of town and the dividing street, Caseros. Here are some pics I took on my first visit. Many of the vendors I talked to work all week long to make their products for this market day. There was a good variety of many things with high quality.

As we continued down the street I took more pics.

These are wooden bowls with silver trim.

This craftsman was making the baskets as he waited for customers. He told us they are made from a special type of plant called poleo, which also is used for tea leaves. He said the tradition of making these baskets by hand is being lost.

The market continues down Balcarce for three blocks to the end of the street, then it goes around the corner for about one more block.

This man told me he has a bookstore called El Laberinto on the corner of Espaņa and Pueyrredon (Pueyrredon is also called Lerma street on the other side of Caseros street.) He said he had books in English, German and French.

Some sweets.
